Birnam J. Wood

THERE'S MANY MARE TALES TAE TELL

Birnam J. Wood is an Edinburgh-based singer-songwriter working at the intersection of folk and Americana, drawn to songs that carry the weight of place, history, and lived experience.

He first came to prominence as the frontman of alternative rock band The Dark Jokes (2012–2017), touring internationally and developing a reputation for emotionally direct performances. Over time, his songwriting gravitated away from volume and toward narrative, space, and restraint — a shift that would later find its natural setting in Memphis, Tennessee.

Recently, Wood returned from the United States, where he recorded the opening sessions of his debut album at the legendary Ardent Studios. Known for its role in shaping the work of Big Star, The Staple Singers, Steve Earle, and The White Stripes, Ardent’s emphasis on feel, character, and performance over studio perfection aligned closely with Wood’s evolving artistic instincts.

While in Memphis, Wood also performed a live session at Sun Recording Studios, a space synonymous with the birth of modern popular music. Sun’s history — as the place where Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Howlin’ Wolf, and Roy Orbison first recorded — provided a powerful backdrop for Wood’s own work. Standing in a room where blues, country, gospel, and rock ’n’ roll first collided, he approached the session with an emphasis on simplicity, immediacy, and emotional truth.

The experience reinforced Wood’s commitment to songs that feel lived-in rather than polished, shaped by human touch and the energy of the moment. His current work reflects this influence through acoustic instrumentation, spacious arrangements, and lyrics concerned with memory, distance, and belonging.

Alongside his solo work, Wood continues to develop Birnam J. Wood & The Mare’s Tales, a collaborative project with Ohio-born violinist Mollie Folkman, centred on traditional recording approaches and intimate, story-led performances.

Birnam J. Wood’s music occupies a space between folk and Americana — informed by the lineage of Sun and Ardent Studios, shaped by time on the road, and grounded in a deep respect for the craft of a well-written song.
